Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that patients who stop using popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying these treatments must be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a return to starting mass in about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Experiences

Individuals who have come off the medication describe a powerful return of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said a patient.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Use

Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle changes.
