Roughly 50 automobiles have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to police.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postboxes were defaced, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they reported in a statement.
Police report they were contacted late on Wednesday, when a resident noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish liquid.
The substance had been drawn in the shape of a swastika, they reported.
Officers then located multiple other vandalized automobiles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under legislation banning the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials state initial examinations indicate the substance was probably human blood.
"There is still no clue as to its origin; officials are presently not informed of any injuries in connection with the event," they stated.
City officials said they were trying "to unravel the case" and have appealed to the residents for information.
An important political figure commented the vandalism made him without words and required to be resolved promptly.
"This incident hits the very heart of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the extremist violent incident in 2020," he stated on social media, referring to the killing of nine people by a assailant targeting people of immigrant origin in five years prior.
