Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for an extended period when numerous of them drifted across the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
